Program details
Overview
Animal Science is a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major examining how animal behaviour, housing, and management systems affect the efficiency and welfare of modern animal production. Students study how environmental conditions influence productivity, how physiology affects reproduction, and how animal breeding and nutrition can be used to improve food quality, production, and performance in livestock systems. The curriculum combines animal science fundamentals with applied coursework in genetics, nutrition, physiology, and production-system management, preparing graduates for roles in the livestock, agri-food, and animal-agriculture industries, as well as further study in animal or veterinary sciences. An optional co-operative education stream extends the program to five years and includes four work terms of paid, degree-related work experience. The major is delivered through Guelph's Ontario Agricultural College and shares foundational science coursework with related Bachelor of Science in Agriculture majors before students specialize in animal-focused subjects.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Animal Science is entered through the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (B.Sc.(Agr.)). Applicants need English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), two of Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Physics (SPH4U), and two additional 4U or 4M courses, six 4U/M courses in total. Completion of 4U Biology and 4U Chemistry specifically is recommended even though only two of the three sciences are required, since Animal Science coursework draws on both. The admission average is calculated from these six 4U/M courses under the current Ontario Secondary School Curriculum, with equivalent courses counted once and the non-academic component of 4U/M co-op courses excluded from the calculation.
