Animal Health and Disease covers general animal physiology and susceptibility to disease, including methods for limiting and controlling outbreaks and their implications for animals, consumers and the environment, with emphasis on preventing, treating and understanding disease in domesticated animals. Students begin with foundational courses in genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry before progressing to physiology, immunology, animal nutrition, animal industries and animal behaviour. Hands-on sessions take place on McGill's teaching and research farm with cows, sheep and poultry, alongside field trips related to animal and veterinary science. The specialization must be taken with the Agro-Environmental Sciences major (Life Sciences (Biological & Agricultural) recommended) within the Bachelor of Science (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences), offered by the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Courses include Mammalian Physiology, Immunology and Biology of Lactation. Graduates pursue careers such as veterinarian, animal health technologist, animal production consultant, policy advisor and researcher, or continue to graduate study.
