Overview
This programme leads to a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at the University of Guelph. Coursework examines the forces of power, authority and governance that shape political life, organized around five areas of specialization: Political Thought; Canadian Politics; Public Policy, Governance and Law; Comparative Politics; and International Relations and Global Studies. The Honours major requires a minimum of 9.50 credits in Political Science, taken within the standard eight-semester, four-year full-time Bachelor of Arts course of study used across University of Guelph Bachelor of Arts programmes, which totals 20.00 credits including distribution requirements. Students apply their learning through mock conferences, simulations and co-op placements; the co-op stream extends the programme to four and a half years with three work terms. Graduates are prepared for careers and further study in public service, law, policy analysis, international affairs and journalism.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Bachelor of Arts admits Ontario secondary-school applicants who present English (ENG4U) plus five additional Grade 12 4U or 4M courses, six 4U/M courses in total. This requirement covers the Bachelor of Arts General and every B.A. major other than Economics and Quantitative Economics and Finance, including Anthropology, Art History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science and Psychology. The admission average is calculated from these six courses under the current Ontario Secondary School Curriculum; if two completed courses are judged equivalent (for example, legacy OAC English alongside 4U English), only one counts toward the average, and the non-academic component of 4U/M co-op courses is excluded entirely. Applicants intending Anthropology, Political Science, Psychology or another Social Science major are additionally encouraged, though not required, to complete a 4U Mathematics course among their five additional courses.
