Program details
Overview
Anthropology at Guelph examines human cultures and the biological, social, and historical dimensions of human existence, training students to critically analyze human behaviour and cultural dynamics. The department's faculty conduct research across biological, socio-cultural, environmental, linguistic, and medical anthropology, with departmental research strengths in health and wellbeing, environment and conservation, and food, culture, and society. Coursework introduces the discipline's traditional subfields alongside applied and contemporary approaches to studying human diversity, drawing on ethnographic, archaeological, and biological methods. Students develop skills in qualitative and comparative analysis, cross-cultural research, and written and oral communication, preparing them for further graduate study or careers in community, government, health, heritage, and international-development settings. The program is offered within Guelph's Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences. An optional co-operative education stream extends the program to four and a half years, adding degree-related paid work terms.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Bachelor of Arts admits Ontario secondary-school applicants who present English (ENG4U) plus five additional Grade 12 4U or 4M courses, six 4U/M courses in total. This requirement covers the Bachelor of Arts General and every B.A. major other than Economics and Quantitative Economics and Finance, including Anthropology, Art History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science and Psychology. The admission average is calculated from these six courses under the current Ontario Secondary School Curriculum; if two completed courses are judged equivalent (for example, legacy OAC English alongside 4U English), only one counts toward the average, and the non-academic component of 4U/M co-op courses is excluded entirely. Applicants intending Anthropology, Political Science, Psychology or another Social Science major are additionally encouraged, though not required, to complete a 4U Mathematics course among their five additional courses.
