Computer Science & Geographical Information Science is a multidisciplinary Bachelor of Science major offered jointly by the University of Lethbridge's Departments of Geography & Environment and Mathematics & Computer Science. It gives students a firm theoretical, technical and applied background in geographical information science (GIS), which draws extensively on computer science foundations, covering the use and analysis of digital maps, databases, models, mobile applications, navigation and spatial-integration tools. Application areas include remote sensing, geographic information systems, computer graphics, image processing, and mapping and spatial modelling, all built on computer science algorithms, software development, platform integration, hardware design and operating-system principles. The major combines applied training with solid theoretical grounding and provides a strong foundation for graduate study or employment in a field that neither department alone can supply. A GPA-dependent honours thesis option is available in the fourth year, and students may add a minor from another discipline.
