The Joint Major in Mathematics and Computer Science combines the mathematical skills of reasoning and problem solving with the study of algorithms and computing. The program covers coursework across both disciplines, including algebra, algorithm design, calculus, numerical analysis, software systems, programming, and probability. Students develop the tools to work at the intersection of mathematics and computer science, applying mathematical reasoning to computational problems and computational methods to mathematical questions. The two disciplines are treated as complementary skill sets that reinforce each other throughout the program. Coursework draws on the Faculty of Science's mathematics and computer science departments. Graduates are prepared for further study or careers in fields that require a combined mathematical and computational background, such as software development, data science, quantitative research, and further graduate study in mathematics or computer science.
