The Joint Major in Physics and Computer Science combines two complementary fields of study. Physics develops an analytic, problem-solving approach to understanding nature, while computer science builds skills in producing practical and marketable applications alongside its own theoretical foundations. The program gives students a grounding in both disciplines, with computer science methods applied to solving problems in physics and physics concepts informing computational approaches. Students take coursework across both departments, developing a scientific perspective that draws on quantitative reasoning from physics and algorithmic and computational thinking from computer science. The joint structure is intended for students who want depth in both areas rather than a single-discipline major. Graduates are prepared for further study or careers in fields that draw on both physical science and computing, including scientific computing, data-intensive physics research, and software development for technical applications.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants apply through the Faculty of Science; the program page sets no admission criteria of its own. McGill's admission requirements vary by educational background (Quebec CEGEP or high school, Ontario high school, other Canadian high school, U.S. high school, international curricula, home-schooling, university transfer, or mature-student status); grades equal to or above the published minimums do not guarantee admission, and the review may consider the complete academic record. English proficiency is required unless exempt: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no component below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo English Test 125, PTE Academic 65, or CAEL 70.
