Program details

Overview

This Bachelor of Science in Chemistry explores the atoms and molecules that make up matter and how they interact, combine, and change, spanning analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, with sample coursework in introductory and experimental organic chemistry, computational chemistry, and the biochemistry of proteins and gene expression. The degree is offered as a Major (minimum 2.00 GPA) or Honours (minimum 3.00 GPA), each around four years, with a five-year co-op option including several paid work terms; a Chemistry-Physics joint Honours option and a minor are also available. Honours requires full-time study, while the Major can be completed full-time or part-time, delivered on the Fort Garry campus, with undergraduate research opportunities integrated throughout. It suits students seeking professional scientific training ahead of graduate study, in a department that also houses biochemistry alongside the core chemistry disciplines.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Faculty of Science, Direct Entry (high school or fewer than 24 post-secondary credit hours) or Advanced Entry (24+ credit hours, minimum 2.00 Adjusted GPA). This is a faculty-level requirement, not restated on the program page: direct entry needs English 40S, Applied Mathematics 40S or Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S, one of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science or Physics 40S, and an academic 40S course, with a minimum 80% average and no less than 60% in each course. Applicants are admitted to the Faculty of Science generally and do not select Chemistry at entry. The Major or Honours in Chemistry is declared after completing a minimum of 24 credit hours (usually end of year 1-2) with specific course/grade requirements; Major requires minimum 2.00 degree GPA, Honours requires minimum 3.00 degree GPA.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply directly to the University of Manitoba. As of this September 2026 fetch, the Direct Entry deadlines page shows only the Fall 2026 cycle in full - University 1 and the Diploma in Agriculture at May 1, 2026 domestic / March 1, 2026 international, other Direct Entry programs at March 1, 2026 - a cycle that has already closed, alongside minor Winter 2027 (Dec 1, 2026) and Summer 2027 (Apr 1, 2027) intake deadlines. No Fall 2027 Direct Entry deadline has been published yet, so specific 2027 dates cannot be stated for the university's main intake. The Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Jazz Studies deadline (January 15, applying equally to domestic and international applicants) is likewise confirmed only for the 2026-27 cycle, also closed, with no 2027-28 bulletin posted. These are described as fixed deadlines rather than rolling admission, and the university opens each new cycle's applications on October 1. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
