Program details
Overview
The Linguistics program at the University of Manitoba awards a Bachelor of Arts in three formats: a General degree (90 credit hours), an Advanced degree (120 credit hours), or an Honours degree (120 credit hours, minimum 3.00 GPA, versus 2.00 for the other two tracks), alongside a minor option and opportunities to combine studies with co-op. Courses examine how human language is structured, acquired, used, and how it changes over time, spanning phonology, semantics, sociolinguistics, signed languages, and second-language acquisition, with particular attention to local and Indigenous languages, both spoken and signed. A pre-professional clinical concentration is available for students planning further study in speech-language pathology or audiology. Instruction is delivered on the Fort Garry campus, and all three degree formats can be completed part-time. The Honours track is presented as the preferred route for students intending to pursue graduate studies, while the General and Advanced options suit those aiming for work in second-language teaching, translation and interpretation, language preservation, or technology fields such as artificial intelligence.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission is first to the Faculty of Arts general B.A. program, not directly to a subject major. Direct Entry from high school requires Manitoba high school graduation with five full Grade 12 credits (S, G, or U) and a minimum 70% average over English 40S, Mathematics 40S, and two more academic 40S courses, with no less than 60% in each. Advanced Entry (transfer, 24+ credit hours) requires a minimum cumulative or adjusted GPA of 2.00 (or, under the Dean's Recommendation pathway, a 2.00 GPA on the best 24 transferable credit hours). Once admitted, a student may declare a Linguistics Major (30 credit hours) or Minor (18 credit hours) once its prerequisite is satisfied; the Faculty's rule for entry into any Major or Minor is a grade of C or better in the prerequisite course(s) for Linguistics.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply directly to the University of Manitoba. As of this September 2026 fetch, the Direct Entry deadlines page shows only the Fall 2026 cycle in full - University 1 and the Diploma in Agriculture at May 1, 2026 domestic / March 1, 2026 international, other Direct Entry programs at March 1, 2026 - a cycle that has already closed, alongside minor Winter 2027 (Dec 1, 2026) and Summer 2027 (Apr 1, 2027) intake deadlines. No Fall 2027 Direct Entry deadline has been published yet, so specific 2027 dates cannot be stated for the university's main intake. The Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Jazz Studies deadline (January 15, applying equally to domestic and international applicants) is likewise confirmed only for the 2026-27 cycle, also closed, with no 2027-28 bulletin posted. These are described as fixed deadlines rather than rolling admission, and the university opens each new cycle's applications on October 1. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
