The Bachelor of Arts in French covers three main areas: language, including vocabulary, grammar, and syntax leading to writing, speaking, reading, listening, and translating skills; literature, spanning poetry, prose, and drama in French from Europe, Africa, and North America from the 17th century to the present; and culture and civilization, including the development of French-speaking cultures as expressed through media such as comics and cinema. The program is offered as a BA General (90 credit hours, three years, minimum 2.0 GPA), a BA Advanced (120 credit hours, four years, minimum 2.0 GPA, with major and minor or double major options), a BA Honours (120 credit hours, four years, minimum 3.0 GPA, available as single or double honours and preferred for graduate study), or an 18-credit-hour minor. All degree types can be completed part-time, and the program is delivered at the Fort Garry campus. No co-operative education placement or thesis requirement is described. Direct Entry from high school requires Manitoba high school graduation with five full Grade 12 credits (S, G, or U) and a minimum 70% average over English 40S, Mathematics 40S, and two more academic 40S courses, with no less than 60% in each. Advanced Entry (transfer, 24+ credit hours) requires a minimum cumulative or adjusted GPA of 2.00 (or, under the Dean's Recommendation pathway, a 2.00 GPA on the best 24 transferable credit hours). Once admitted, a student may declare a French Major (30 credit hours) or Minor (18 credit hours) once its prerequisite is satisfied; the Faculty's rule for entry into any Major or Minor is a grade of C or better in the prerequisite course(s) for French.
