Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in German is described as one of the most advanced German cultural studies programs in Canada and the only one on the Prairies to offer both Honours and MA degrees in the subject, with particular strength in German literature from 1933 onward alongside the Romanticism and Enlightenment periods. Students build language competence alongside the study of texts, films, and cultural representation, with coursework covering translation, composition, Holocaust representation, fairy tales, and contemporary German and Austrian culture in literature and film. The program is offered as a BA General (90 credit hours, three years), a BA Advanced (120 credit hours, four years), a BA Honours (120 credit hours, four years, preferred for those planning graduate study), or an 18-credit-hour minor, with a co-op option available. Up to two semester-long exchanges with the German universities of Greifswald and Trier carry credit toward the degree, and an annual summer work programme and summer schools in Germany are also offered; after the undergraduate degree, graduates can spend a year in Germany as a foreign language assistant in English. Delivered in person at the Fort Garry campus, the program suits students seeking direct entry into employment or a professional program as well as those aiming for graduate study in German.

Admission Requirements: Admission is first to the Faculty of Arts general B.A. program, not directly to a subject major. Direct Entry from high school requires Manitoba high school graduation with five full Grade 12 credits (S, G, or U) and a minimum 70% average over English 40S, Mathematics 40S, and two more academic 40S courses, with no less than 60% in each. Advanced Entry (transfer, 24+ credit hours) requires a minimum cumulative or adjusted GPA of 2.00 (or, under the Dean's Recommendation pathway, a 2.00 GPA on the best 24 transferable credit hours). Once admitted, a student may declare a German Major (30 credit hours) or Minor (18 credit hours) once its prerequisite is satisfied; the Faculty's rule for entry into any Major or Minor is a grade of C or better in the prerequisite course(s) for German.
