Overview
The Interdisciplinary Studies MA is designed for research questions that don't fit neatly inside a single UNBC graduate program, drawing on faculty across the university willing to supervise humanities- or social-science-based work. Students are normally admitted to a 27-credit-hour course-based stream culminating in a research paper, though they may apply to transfer into a thesis-based stream after 15 credit hours if their proposal warrants it. Every student's electives must be drawn from at least two academic disciplines, chosen with a supervisor and reflecting the genuinely cross-disciplinary rationale required for admission. The program also houses a specialization in Metis and Canadien Studies, examining the social and cultural history of Metis and Canadien communities in British Columbia during and after the fur trade.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: UNBC's Interdisciplinary Studies calendar page sets no separate academic threshold and directs applicants to the university's general graduate admission requirements: for domestic applicants a minimum overall average of 3.00 (B) in third- and fourth-year coursework, and for anyone whose first language is not English, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band under 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90 (no section under 20), PTE Academic 65 (no skill under 60), or CAEL 70 (no subtest under 60). On top of that general standard, the program requires an interdisciplinary research topic drawing on at least two programs described in the Graduate Calendar and a UNBC faculty member willing to supervise the work before acceptance. Applicants submit the Application for Admission with the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program proposal cover sheet, a one-page research statement, official transcripts, and three reference letters, at least two of them academic. The program admits for the September, January and May semesters.
