Overview
Economic development remains a critical issue for the more than three-quarters of the world's population living in countries classified as low or middle income, and its causes and consequences are still contested. This MA examines the shifting global, regional and national contexts for development, the policy lessons that comparative study can yield, and the analytical tools development economists need to contribute in practice. Because development cannot be understood in isolation - grasping poverty, for instance, requires social and health science insight as well as economic analysis - the training deliberately exposes students to interdisciplinary approaches. The degree is available full time or part time in three configurations: coursework only, project based, or thesis, with students normally admitted first into the coursework option and able to apply to transfer once they have built a record. Entry is competitive and applicants submit a sample of written academic work.

Admission Requirements: The Development Economics MA follows UNBC's General Admission standard from the Graduate Academic Calendar and normally requires a four-year undergraduate degree equivalent to a UNBC degree in Economics. Applicants must submit a senior-level undergraduate research paper or essay as a writing sample, strong letters of academic recommendation, and a strong letter of intent. Anyone who has not completed an equivalent of ECON 312-3 Introduction to Econometrics at the undergraduate level must achieve at least a B in it during the program. International applicants must meet UNBC's graduate English-language proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band under 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90 (no component under 20), PTE Academic 65 (no component under 60), or CAEL 70 (no subtest under 60). No numeric GPA minimum beyond UNBC's general 3.00 (B) standard is published for this program.
