Overview

UNBC's International Studies MA focuses jointly on global development and global environmental change, drawing courses from eleven different graduate programs under the shared oversight of the Department of Economics and the Department of Global and International Studies. All students begin in a course-based stream covering development theory and institutions, research methods, and environmental policy and practice, then choose to finish through further coursework, a six-credit-hour research paper, or a twelve-credit-hour thesis after completing at least 12 credit hours. Elective options range across anthropology, economics, geography, gender studies, history, and political science, letting students build a program that reflects issues facing the Global South and northern regions including the Arctic. Teaching assistantships are available to some full-time students to help fund their studies.

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.0

Admission Requirements: UNBC's International Studies MA calendar page states no program-specific admission criteria and points applicants to the Office of Graduate Administration for full details, so admission follows UNBC's general graduate requirements: for domestic applicants a minimum overall average of 3.00 (B) in third- and fourth-year coursework, and for applicants whose first language is not English, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band under 6.0), TOEFL iBT 90 (no section under 20), PTE Academic 65 (no skill under 60), or CAEL 70 (no subtest under 60). The program accepts applications for the September semester only; full application materials and deadlines are published on the graduate admissions website.
