Chemistry investigates the substances that make up the physical world and how they change, connecting to nearly all areas of science and engineering, from drug development to materials for electronic devices and sustainable energy. The Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences delivers this Honours programme through classroom teaching combined with practical laboratory training and individual instruction. The 120-unit curriculum covers principles of chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus, linear algebra and physics in first year, followed by inorganic, analytical, thermodynamic and physical chemistry in second year, intermediate organic chemistry, spectroscopy, quantum chemistry and transition metal chemistry in third year, and principles of instrumental analysis plus a fourth-year option in fourth year. It is offered in English and French, with co-operative education and a French immersion stream available. Graduates are prepared for careers spanning pharmaceuticals, materials science, forensic science, and emerging green technologies including nanotechnology and sustainable energy.
