Hons in Synthetic and Catalytic Chemistry (HBSc)

Synthetic and Catalytic Chemistry is a Specialist program in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto St. George campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Science accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry. The program covers the fundamentals and practical aspects of modern synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry and the applications of catalytic reactions, including green chemistry from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. The 14.0-credit curriculum begins with core chemistry, mathematics, and physics courses in first year, followed by foundational biochemistry, organic, and inorganic chemistry, specialized synthetic and catalytic methods courses, advanced 400-level courses such as CHM432H1, CHM440H1, CHM441H1, and CHM443H1, and a research option through CHM395Y1, CHM499Y1, or PHC489Y1. It is a limited-enrolment program: students need at least 4.0 credits completed and a final grade of 63% or higher in the required first-year chemistry courses to be considered, though meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. Students may also apply for the Arts & Science Internship Program (ASIP) after Year 1 or Year 2, adding a work-integrated learning component.
