Overview
Chemistry at Queen's University is offered as an Honours Bachelor of Science through the Department of Chemistry, with plan options that include the CHEM-P-BSH Specialization, an intensive concentration providing an in-depth introduction to all major sub-disciplines of chemistry, and the CHEM-M-BSH Major, a broader Honours plan combining chemistry with another area of study. Both plans are accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry and include a fourth-year research project alongside a range of senior chemistry courses that allow students to focus on particular chemical sub-disciplines. First- and second-year coursework covers general and organic chemistry alongside supporting mathematics and physics courses. Students planning further study in chemistry are encouraged to take additional senior chemistry electives. The department also offers non-honours General plans in Science and Arts, and a Chemistry Minor, for students combining chemistry with another primary field of study. Admission Requirements: Queen's Faculty of Arts and Science admits science applicants under the Science admission category (QS), which covers Biology and Cognitive Sciences (QSB), Mathematics and Statistics (QSM) and Physical and Chemical Sciences (QSP) sub-groups — including plans such as Astrophysics, Chemistry, Earth Systems Science, Mathematical Physics, Physics & Astronomy, Biology-Mathematics, and the Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Geology, Environmental Life Sciences and Environmental Toxicology plans. Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U and Calculus and Vectors 4U are mandatory, plus two of Biology 4U, Chemistry 4U or Physics 4U chosen to match the intended plan's prerequisites, and two further courses at the 4U or 4M level. Recent admission cycles have required a low-80s overall average for this category. Applicants apply through the OUAC and submit official transcripts; applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not studied long enough in English, must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement. No supplementary application is required for general Science entry.
