Overview
Environmental Chemistry is a Major program within the Honours Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Arts & Science, delivered at the St. George campus. Environmental chemistry is the study of the chemical impacts of human activity on soil, air and water, and the program develops fundamental skills in instrumental and mechanistic chemical analysis needed to understand the sources, fate and impacts of organic and inorganic contaminants in soil, air, water and biological tissues. It provides a solid foundation in chemistry alongside specialized environmental and analytical chemistry courses, with flexibility for students to add courses in areas of particular interest. The 8.0-credit program runs from first-year general chemistry and mathematics through second-year analytical and organic chemistry and third-year instrumental analysis to a Fourth Year of advanced coursework, spanning four years of study. Students often combine the Major with Environmental Science or life-science programs such as Cell & Systems Biology or Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. Enrolment is limited: students apply after completing 4.0 credits and the required first-year chemistry sequence, with a minimum grade in each required course that changes each year.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario applicants apply through OUAC 101/105 and need the OSSD with six 4U/M subjects including English (ENG4U/EAE4U), Biology (SBI4U), Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U) and Chemistry (SCH4U); Physics is recommended. Enrolment in the Environmental Chemistry Major is limited: after completing 4.0 credits and either (CHM135H1, CHM136H1) or CHM151Y1, applicants with a final grade below 63% in either required course are not considered; meeting the minimum does not guarantee a space. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's English proficiency requirement via an accepted test (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo, CAEL or Cambridge C1/C2) unless exempt.
