Overview

This program offered through First Nations University of Canada leads to a Bachelor of Indigenous Education (BEd), with elementary and secondary streams, or a two-year Bachelor of Indigenous Education After Degree (BEAD) for students who already hold a degree; the BEd takes four years and can be completed full-time or part-time. The curriculum incorporates Indigenous worldview, content, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning, developing culturally relevant teaching approaches alongside knowledge of First Nations cultures, values, traditions, and languages. All courses are designed to include Indigenous knowledge processes and work with Elders. Students complete field placements throughout the program, progressing from single-day classroom visits to a 16-week internship in provincial, urban, rural, or First Nations-controlled schools. The degree is approved by the Saskatchewan Teachers' Professional Regulatory Board as meeting the requirements for teacher certification in Saskatchewan.
