Program details

Overview

Extended Studies in Aboriginal Education is a 30-credit-hour certificate taken beyond the Bachelor of Education degree, offered through the Centre for Continuing Education in partnership with First Nations University of Canada. It is designed for teachers who already hold a B.Ed. and want further training in cross-cultural education, filling a gap in teacher preparation for working with Aboriginal students. Coursework covers Indigenous history, culture, and knowledge systems, and includes classes such as Indigenous studies and cross-cultural education topics (for example EIND 405, ECCU 200, and EIND 205) alongside other approved options. The program prepares graduates to teach Aboriginal children and to promote cultural understanding in the classroom, and follows a flexible, developmental structure suited to practising teachers pursuing an additional professional qualification in Indigenous education.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must already hold, or be completing, a Bachelor of Education degree, since this is a 30-credit-hour certificate program taken beyond the B.Ed.; specific entrance requirements vary by applicant type (high school student, transfer student, current University of Regina student, mature student, and others) and applications are made through the Centre for Continuing Education.
