Overview

Extended Studies in First Nations Language is a certificate program that supports the learning, teaching, and revitalization of Indigenous languages within a culturally grounded education framework. Offered through the Centre for Continuing Education in partnership with First Nations University of Canada, it is intended for teachers who already hold a Bachelor of Education degree and have some background in Cree and Saulteaux, and who want to build their knowledge and training in First Nations language teaching. Required coursework includes Indigenous Language courses (numbered 202, 203, and 225 or 230) together with education- and language-focused elective courses. Graduates are prepared to teach First Nations languages and to support language revitalization efforts in schools and their wider communities. The program is administered by the Centre for Continuing Education, which handles applications and course registration for participating teachers.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Education degree and have some existing background in Cree and Saulteaux language, and must want to increase their knowledge and training in First Nations language teaching; applications are made through the Centre for Continuing Education.
