The Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan is a thesis-based, research-intensive program applying engineering principles and design to problems in medicine, veterinary medicine, and related fields. Faculty research spans bio-medical science, including biomechanics, bioinformatics, and injury; bio-engineering, including tissue engineering, biomaterials, and drug delivery; and medical imaging and diagnosis or intervention, including MRI and synchrotron imaging. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities, laboratories, research centres, and the Canadian Light Source synchrotron. Admission is competitive and requires a confirmed faculty supervisor before application. Students typically enter after completing a relevant master's degree, though direct entry from a four-year honours degree is available to exceptionally strong candidates. The expected length of the program is four years, delivered in person. Most thesis-based graduate students in the College of Engineering receive funding through scholarships, stipends, research fellowships, and teaching assistantships.
