Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy is offered by the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS), a school established jointly by the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina. The program prepares graduates to conduct advanced, interdisciplinary policy research across academic, government, not-for-profit, and corporate sectors. Core coursework totals a minimum of 12 credit units, including required courses in public policy theory, research methods, and professional practice, alongside mandatory research-ethics modules where the dissertation involves human or animal subjects. Students maintain continuous registration in a dissertation research course throughout the program and complete a doctoral candidacy assessment before proceeding to the dissertation defence. Entry is normally from a relevant master's degree. Graduates are trained to work as advanced policy researchers and analysts, and to train future public service professionals, in academia, government, think tanks, and other research organizations.
