Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy is an advanced research degree offered through the School of Public Policy and Administration. It is described by the university as the only program of its kind in Canada and one of the few offered worldwide. Doctoral candidates complete advanced coursework in public policy theory and methods before undertaking original, independent research culminating in a dissertation under faculty supervision. The program develops advanced analytical and research skills for studying public policy processes, institutions and outcomes, drawing on multidisciplinary approaches from political science, economics and public administration. The program normally takes five years of full-time study to complete, with admission offered for the Fall term. Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a master's degree in a relevant field. Carleton's minimum graduate admission standard for doctoral programs is a graduate average of B+ or better in coursework, including the thesis, with no grade below B-.
