Program details

Overview

This certificate supports educators and others in responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, teaching approaches to indigenizing practice in ways meant to build respect and empowerment among Indigenous peoples and for Indigenous ways of knowing. Study brings awareness to past and present colonial harms, works toward strengthening relationships between Indigenous and settler communities, and covers proper protocol for learning from and with Indigenous peoples.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The programme page directs applicants to the Indigenous Studies Certificate entry in UFV's Academic Calendar. Admission requires B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, or a minimum age of 19 before the first day of classes; no specific high-school courses, grades or GPA are set beyond this. Applicants must meet UFV's Entry-level English language proficiency requirement, satisfied by IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80 with no section below 19, PTE Academic 56 (writing 52), or Duolingo English Test 100, among other accepted equivalencies listed in the calendar's English Language Proficiency section. Course prerequisites must otherwise be met, and official transcripts from every non-UFV post-secondary institution attended must be submitted directly by that institution. Applicants who meet the entrance requirements are admitted in order of application date. The one-year, full- or part-time certificate is offered at the Abbotsford and Chilliwack (CEP) campuses, with applications accepted for the Fall, Winter, and Summer semesters.

Application Details

Start Date: Fall, Winter, Summer
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
