BA/BS in Materials Engineering (BASc)

Materials Engineering is a four-year Bachelor of Applied Science Specialist program in the University of Toronto's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, teaching the synthesis, processing, and characterization of materials and the relationships among structure, properties, processing, and performance. The first year establishes fundamentals in mathematics, chemistry, and physics alongside an introduction to design, communications, and societal issues in engineering. The second year introduces structural and analytical characterization of materials, mechanics of solids, classical thermodynamics, diffusion and kinetics, and engineering statistics and numerical methods. The third year covers phase transformations, electrical and quantum-mechanical properties of matter, thermodynamics of materials, heat and mass transfer, process design, and mechanical behaviour, together with a full-year materials manufacturing and design laboratory. The fourth year addresses environmental degradation of materials, composite materials, and materials selection in design, plus technical electives across four core areas -- biomaterials, manufacturing with materials, sustainable materials processing, and design of materials including nanomaterials -- culminating in a senior capstone design course. Admission requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with English, Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, Chemistry, and Physics at the 4U level.
