French Studies at Queen's University offers modular degree plans in French language, literature, and francophone culture through the Department of French Studies. The Major plan requires 48 units and, combined with a major or minor in another subject and sufficient electives to a total of 120 units, leads to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree; a 24-unit Minor and a 90-unit General (BA) plan are also offered, and a 60-unit Specialization plan is scheduled to open to students in 2027-2028. Coursework builds proficiency in written and spoken French together with the ability to analyze literary and cultural texts and complex cultural situations. The standard entry point to the French sequence is FREN 152, reached after completing FREN 151 (or FREN 118 for students needing additional preparation); students who test in above this level begin directly in FREN 152 or in FREN 230/231. The Department is based in Kingston Hall on Queen's Kingston campus.
