Bioethics (MHSc) is a two-year, course-based professional master's program offered by the Department of Public Health Sciences in collaboration with the Joint Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto, designed for health practitioners, researchers, and administrators. The program uses a hybrid delivery model combining in-person and online learning in a modular format, with courses offered every two to three weeks, allowing high-achieving professionals to earn the degree without interrupting their careers; students attend an in-person residency of about five days in each academic session for immersive, applied-skills learning. Core courses are largely hybrid or fully online with synchronous and asynchronous elements. Through an interactive, problem-based learning approach, a practicum experience, and an independent capstone project in applied bioethics, the program develops knowledge and skill competencies in bioethics education, research, and practice, with a strong emphasis on interprofessional exchange. It has no thesis requirement; students interested in a research-stream alternative can instead pursue the Collaborative Specialization in Bioethics.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Normally an appropriate bachelor's degree with a minimum B+ average in the final year, together with a recognized professional degree in a health or health-related discipline (e.g. MD, BScN, BScOT, BScPT, BSW, LLB/JD) or equivalent; applicants from other disciplines are considered individually. At least three years of relevant full-time professional work experience in a health-related setting is required, though applicants with less experience may be considered in exceptional circumstances. The program favours candidates with outstanding academic credentials and demonstrated evidence of scholarly ability.
