Overview

The certificate introduces pressing social justice issues at both local and global levels, with a focus on how gender shapes individual lives, experiences, knowledge and possibilities. Students consider how gender intersects with race, class, sexuality, ability, age and other aspects of identity.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: UVic does not set a distinct entrance average for this certificate: it is declared through the Faculty of Humanities Academic Advising Office by a student already admitted to UVic, after that student satisfies the Faculty of Humanities Breadth Requirement, and it can be added to another major after admission. The certificate requires 10.5 units of Gender Studies coursework, and students may take further Gender Studies courses as electives beyond that minimum; the university's Academic Calendar remains the record of course-level prerequisites for specific GNDR courses. Because the certificate is added to an existing UVic registration rather than applied for on its own, its practical entry bar is UVic's general secondary-school admission standard for the student's primary major rather than a Gender-Studies-specific average. Applicants whose first language is not English must still meet UVic's language-proficiency requirement, typically IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band under 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 88 overall with no section under 20.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, which opens for 2027-entry applications on 1 October 2026: most degree programmes see September 2027 entry close 31 January 2027, January 2027 entry close 30 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry close 31 March 2027, though Teacher Education post-degree programmes close 2 January 2027, Indigenous Education post-degree admits on an ongoing basis, and Engineering's Summer entry (high-school graduates only) closes 31 December 2026. International applicants use the same portal and face identical dates, since UVic publishes no separate international deadline. UVic treats these as fixed annual dates rather than rolling admission, though it warns any programme can close early without notice. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
