Overview
Mathematical Optimization is an undergraduate program at the University of Waterloo leading to a Bachelor of Mathematics in Mathematical Optimization within the Faculty of Mathematics. The curriculum begins with a foundation in combinatorics, forecasting, and computer simulation, followed by upper-year courses in combinatorics and optimization alongside mathematics electives, with sample topics including network flow theory, portfolio optimization models, game theory, and convex optimization. The regular program is completed in four years, while the co-op option extends to five years, alternating academic terms with paid work terms. Students share a Faculty of Mathematics core with other mathematics majors in first year before specializing in combinatorics and optimization coursework through the remaining upper years of the degree, building on the same foundation of forecasting and simulation courses introduced early in the program.
