The PhD in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo is a thesis-based doctoral program offered by the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science in the Faculty of Mathematics. Students pursue research-intensive study under a faculty supervisor, developing and defending a doctoral thesis across areas including algorithms, artificial intelligence and machine learning, bioinformatics, computer graphics, cryptography, databases, formal methods, human-computer interaction, programming languages, quantum computing, software engineering, and systems and networking. An optional internship is available after at least one academic term. The program runs full-time over a nominal 48 months, is delivered on-campus, and admits students each September, January and May. Applicants require a master's degree in computer science with a 78% average, though strong undergraduate applicants may apply directly. Applicants whose prior education was not in English must demonstrate English proficiency through an accepted test.
