Overview
The Mathematics: Bachelor of Arts Degree expose students to the vast landscape of advanced mathematical concepts and applications that lie beyond first year introductory calculus. The program aims to develop not only problem solving skills, but also critical thinking and writing skills. Program graduates will have broad exposure to both pure and applied mathematics (including statistics), and thus be suitably prepared to enter the job market immediately or to continue study at the graduate level.
Mathematics graduates find employment in virtually any field in which quantitative comfort and reasoning is required: computing, finance (including banking and insurance), government, actuarial science, teaching and research.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission follows VIU's General Admission Requirements for Academic Programs: BC secondary graduation (or equivalent) with a 'C' in English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12, a prior university degree, transfer with 24+ university credits, a Letter of Permission, or academic mature-student status at 21. The Mathematics BA page states no further programme-specific academic prerequisites and directs applicants with questions to Student Services or an admissions officer. VIU does not publish a programme-specific English-language test table for domestic applicants; the general Degree English Requirement applies, per the university's admission requirements page. The Bachelor of Arts intake runs four times a year, in September, January, May and June for domestic applicants at Nanaimo, Powell River and Cowichan, and once each Fall and once each Spring for international applicants.
