At Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, Canada, Aboriginal University Bridging Program Certificate is offered as a certificate in Indigenous Focus programme. The programme runs for 1 year, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 1,700 per total for local students.
This certificate is built around individual needs, helping Indigenous students upgrade coursework and meet the prerequisites required for their intended post-secondary program. Students select Adult Basic Education courses to satisfy those requirements and may add entry-level university courses as well. The program includes support from instructors, Aboriginal Elders in Residence, and a wider network of staff and fellow students.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Aboriginal University Bridging Program Certificate is designed for students who identify as Indigenous in Canada, including First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples. Since it is built from Adult Basic Education courses, each of which carries its own prerequisite, applicants meet those prerequisites either by providing a recent high school or post-secondary transcript, dated within the last five years, or by taking VIU's ABE assessment. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, or obtain special permission if younger. No minimum GPA, and no IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo or CAEL score, is published for this programme, consistent with its upgrading/bridging design rather than a standard academic-entry bar. VIU notes that an ABE assessment may additionally be required for course-placement purposes before registration.
Application Deadline:Domestic (Canadian) applicants: applications accepted on an ongoing basis for the 8 September 2026 (Fall) start (Nanaimo, Cowichan). Dates are VIU's published application window for this program (as listed September 2026) and can change; apply through EducationPlannerBC.
