Theatre Diploma is a diploma in Performing Arts programme taught at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, Canada. The programme runs for 2 years, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 5,100 per total for local students.
The diploma covers a range of practical elements tied to theatre production alongside academic study of theatre theory and history. Students learn to move plays from script to stage, pick up core acting techniques such as voice, movement and characterisation, and work with costume design, lighting design, sound design, stagecraft and set design. Coursework traces dramatic works spanning early-modern European roots through to more recent Canadian productions, and each year brings a chance to take part in a season of plays and concerts.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: General admission requirements apply, per VIU's Admission Requirements for Academic Programs, plus English 12 with a minimum grade of 'C' (or equivalent) and an interview with the Theatre department; no audition or portfolio is required. Applicants are expected to have some exposure to live theatre and a keen interest in participating in live theatrical events, and to accept the long working hours the field involves. Enrolment is limited, so meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a seat. VIU does not publish a standardized English-language test score for this program; the English 12 requirement (or equivalent) stands in its place. The diploma has one Fall intake for domestic applicants (September 8, 2026) and a Fall intake for international applicants (September 7, 2027).
Application Details
Start Date:September
Application Deadline:Domestic (Canadian) applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC; Vancouver Island University sets no institution-wide equal-consideration date, and its admissions FAQ states deadlines vary by programme, with applications for most academic programmes opening 1 October in the year before a September start. VIU publishes no general closing date for that window; applicants are directed to each programme's own page for its own deadline. International applicants use the same portal; VIU publishes no international-specific institution-wide date either, and several health programmes (Practical Nursing, Nursing Unit Assistant) are stated as not currently open to international students. Each programme's own page carries its own Start Date, Deadlines, and Additional Application Details table for the 2026-27 cycle, and admission for programmes without a stated window is treated as ongoing/rolling until the intake fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
