Overview
Chemical Engineering at Western University is an undergraduate degree that follows the Faculty of Engineering's Common First Year before students specialize from third year onward. Two main options are available within the discipline: a general Chemical Engineering stream focused on traditional chemical processes and process design with an emphasis on preventing pollution at the source, and a Biochemical and Environmental Engineering stream that combines chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering coursework covering renewable energy, biofuels, biotechnology, and pollution control. Students interested in medical applications can pursue a concurrent Biomedical Engineering degree through the School of Biomedical Engineering, adding coursework in signal processing, imaging, and biomedical systems alongside the chemical engineering core. Combined-degree options also exist with Ivey's HBA, with Law, or with more than fifty major modules across Science, Music, Social Science, or Arts and Humanities faculties. Teaching is based in the Spencer Engineering Building on Western's main campus in London, Ontario. The two-stream structure suits students who know they want chemical engineering but are still deciding between a more traditional process-engineering path and one weighted toward environmental and biochemical applications, as well as those wanting to add a biomedical, business, or law credential alongside the engineering degree.

Admission Requirements: Western's Chemical Engineering page states no separate Grade 12 entry requirements of its own: students first gain admission to Western Engineering's shared Common First Year and choose this option for year three. Ontario applicants to Common First Year need an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with six Grade 12 U/M courses, including English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), admitted competitively on the top-six average rather than a fixed cut-off. To progress from first year into this option, students must additionally achieve a Year 1 Weighted Average greater than 60%, per the Faculty's own progression page. International applicants must also meet Western's institution-wide proof-of-English-proficiency policy: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 83 with no section below 20 (before January 21, 2026), among other accepted tests, unless exempt.

Application Deadline:Western applies through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre, which opens for Fall 2027 entry in late September 2026; Western's own equal-consideration deadline for full-time undergraduate study is 15 January 2027, the same date used for domestic (OUAC 101/105) and international applicants alike, since Western publishes no separate international closing date. Several named programmes carry their own earlier deadlines within the cycle: Medicine (MD) closes 1 October 2026, Law (JD) and Dentistry (DDS) close 1 November 2026, Education (BEd) closes 2 November 2026, and Western Integrated Science closes in early April 2027. Students already enrolled in an Ontario high school cannot be required to respond to an offer before 1 June 2027. Admission is not rolling: applicants are assessed against these published deadlines. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
