Overview

The PhD in Education Studies at Western University covers four fields of research: Applied Linguistics, Critical Policy, Equity and Leadership Studies, Curriculum Studies, and School and Applied Child Psychology. The program is full-time and thesis-based, completed over 12 terms (approximately four years), and challenges students to engage with foundational theories and a focused area of educational research, developing expertise that contributes to knowledge, policy, or practice. Students are encouraged to collaborate with institutional and community partners on educational issues and may participate in the Own Your Future professional-development program alongside their thesis work. Admission normally requires a research-based Master's degree in Education or a related field from a recognized institution, with 'A' standing (80%) or equivalent in previous graduate work, and evidence of prior scholarly research such as a Master's thesis, research project, or qualifying research paper. Professional experience in educational settings is recommended but not required.
