Overview
The PhD in Theory and Criticism is offered through Western University's Centre for the Study of Theory and Criticism, an interdisciplinary programme with established strengths in social and political theory, media and cultural studies, critical theory and continental philosophy. It is a full-time, thesis-based doctoral programme structured over 12 terms of study, equivalent to approximately four years, culminating in a dissertation examined by a supervisory committee. Students undertake advanced coursework alongside independent research, developing expertise in critical and theoretical approaches to culture, politics, media and philosophy. Admission requires a Master's degree or equivalent in a Humanities or Social Science discipline, held with a minimum A- (83 percent) average, along with evidence of research potential shown through the applicant's course record and submitted writing samples. Applications are due January 8, with admission decisions typically issued in March. International applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's standard graduate English-language proficiency requirements. Graduates pursue careers in academic research and teaching, as well as roles applying critical theoretical analysis in other sectors.
