Overview
Theory and Criticism (MA) is a thesis-based graduate program offered by the Centre for the Study of Theory and Criticism within Western University's Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The program emphasizes intellectual history and its connection to contemporary forms of critical theory, building on the Centre's strengths in critical theory, continental philosophy, social and political theory, and media and cultural studies, while also engaging students in contemporary critical aesthetic, social and political inquiry. Students complete the degree over six terms of full-time study, culminating in a master's thesis. Applicants typically hold a four-year degree in the humanities or social sciences, though other Honours degrees are considered, and benefit from prior exposure to theoretical or interdisciplinary coursework. Graduates are prepared for further doctoral study or for careers requiring advanced skills in critical and theoretical analysis, and students may apply for funding such as the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Master's and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship.
