Overview
Media, Information and Technoculture (MIT) is an undergraduate program within Western University's Faculty of Information and Media Studies that examines modern communication and information technologies and how they shape everyday life. Coursework analyzes media institutions, technologies, and content across newspapers, radio, television, the internet, and mobile platforms, alongside the economic structures that shape the relationship between media organizations and audiences, and the effects of user-generated content on the broader media landscape. The program takes a balanced approach combining media theory, media history, and research and analysis methods rather than emphasizing production skills alone. MIT is the largest undergraduate program in the faculty, with roughly nine hundred students enrolled overall, but admission is limited to about two hundred and fifty students per year, making it a selective program within the faculty. Teaching is delivered on Western's main campus in London, Ontario. The program suits students who want to think critically and analytically about media systems and information technology rather than pursue a purely technical or production-focused media credential, and who are prepared for a demanding, research-oriented undergraduate workload given the program's selectivity and its combination of theoretical, historical, and analytical coursework.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The FIMS program page for Media, Information and Technoculture states enrolment is limited to about 250 students a year and that admission is competitive and challenging, but does not itself publish Grade 12 prerequisites or an average. Western's Information & Media Studies admission page lists English (ENG4U) as the required Grade 12 U course for Ontario applicants and gives a mid-year admission-average guideline of low-to-mid 80s, noting this does not guarantee a seat. Neither page publishes a program-specific English-proficiency test score; applicants whose first language is not English must meet Western's institution-wide policy of IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) or TOEFL iBT 83 (no section below 20), among other accepted tests, unless exempt.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Western applies through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre, which opens for Fall 2027 entry in late September 2026; Western's own equal-consideration deadline for full-time undergraduate study is 15 January 2027, the same date used for domestic (OUAC 101/105) and international applicants alike, since Western publishes no separate international closing date. Several named programmes carry their own earlier deadlines within the cycle: Medicine (MD) closes 1 October 2026, Law (JD) and Dentistry (DDS) close 1 November 2026, Education (BEd) closes 2 November 2026, and Western Integrated Science closes in early April 2027. Students already enrolled in an Ontario high school cannot be required to respond to an offer before 1 June 2027. Admission is not rolling: applicants are assessed against these published deadlines. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
