Overview

This Master of Theology is awarded jointly by Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto for students who already hold prior graduate-level theological study. Students choose an area of focus from Biblical Studies, Historical Studies, Pastoral and Practical Theology, or Theological Studies, with all coursework at the 5000 level or above, and can complete the degree in one to six years through a part-time-friendly schedule. Two structures are available: Option I, six courses plus a thesis, which can qualify graduates for further doctoral study, and Option II, eight courses plus an extended essay, oriented toward scholarly enhancement without a doctoral pathway. The program is based at Wycliffe College on the University of Toronto's downtown campus. It suits students who already have graduate theological training and want focused, advanced research or a scholarly credential to support academic teaching, doctoral preparation, or the practice of ministry, without committing to a full-time residency schedule.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.30 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Master of Theology requires a baccalaureate degree, normally in Arts, from a recognized college or university, plus a Master of Divinity or an academic master's degree in theological studies of at least two years' duration providing an equivalent theological background (for example a Master of Theological Studies, Master of Religion, or Master of Arts in Theology), completed with at least high second-class standing, a cumulative GPA of 3.3/4.0 (B+), from a recognized institution. Students admitted to the thesis-based Option I, or to the Biblical Studies field under either option, must also demonstrate competency in one or more research languages relevant to their work. Applicants from outside Canada whose primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency through an accepted language test; the programme page does not name scores, so Wycliffe College's institution-wide standard applies: IELTS overall band 7.0, or TOEFL with an overall score of 93 on the internet-based test (minimum 22 in speaking and writing), results no more than two years old.
