York University's PhD in Cinema & Media Studies applies theoretical, historical, and critical approaches to visual media across a range of methodological frameworks, cultural practices, and historiographic models. The program is humanities-based and interdisciplinary, building comprehensive knowledge of cinema and media theory, history, and criticism alongside research and teaching skills. Students take coursework, complete comprehensive examinations, and produce a dissertation intended to make a significant contribution to the discipline, while participating in the university's research culture through colloquia and academic publishing. The degree is a rigorous minimum four-year program, full-time or part-time, preparing graduates for academic and research careers in cinema and media studies and related fields in cultural and communications studies. The program is not currently accepting international PhD applicants, as no funded positions are available for them; international students are considered only for the MA and MFA programs.
