The Bachelor of Science in Counselling is a foundation for graduate study in counselling or clinical psychology and for work in mental health facilities, children's services, schools, hospitals and similar agencies. Students study the principles of counselling and psychotherapy, group dynamics, child and adolescent techniques, work with at-risk youth, grief and bereavement, substance use, conflict and crisis management, and the administration of guidance services.
Psychology courses on development, personality, stress, human sexuality and abnormal psychology sit beside research methods and statistics, while family-focused courses cover parenting and marriage and family dynamics. A nine-credit counselling practicum applies the learning in practice. The degree draws on Judeo-Christian values and prepares graduates for service in the Jamaican and wider Caribbean setting. It requires a minimum of 135 credits, built from a 78-credit core, 15 credits of cognates, electives and general education.
