BA/BS in Biochemistry

The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at Northern Caribbean University studies the chemistry and molecular biology of living systems. Over eight semesters students move from introductory biochemistry through two levels of full biochemistry to analytical and applied biochemistry, with a seminar and final-year research alongside. Supporting core work in biology covers zoology, botany, genetics, molecular biology, biostatistics and biotechnology, and the chemistry core adds general chemistry. Stated aims include understanding metabolic pathways, gene expression and its manipulation, laboratory protocols and instrumentation, and how metabolic defects relate to diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Students also look at industrial biochemical products and are asked to apply their skills to current problems and to present research with confidence. The degree totals 136 credits, made up of 83 core credits, 12 of cognates, 3 of electives and 38 of general education.
