BA/BS in Biological Science

The Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences gives students a grounding in how living things work and how they relate to one another and their surroundings, with an emphasis on conserving and improving ecosystems. The degree runs for eight semesters in its recommended sequence. Core study covers cell structure and function, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, zoology, botany, ecology, physiology, histology and biostatistics, and students complete a research project and two biology seminars. Laboratory methods such as microscopy and DNA analysis are taught alongside experimental design, written reports and oral presentation. Cognates in chemistry, physics, computer applications and pre-calculus support the science core, and electives can be chosen with an adviser; students aiming at medicine, dentistry or optometry are advised to take a larger share of biology electives. The programme totals 130 to 134 credits.
