Globalisation and Development Studies is a social science programme examining how globalisation affects and interconnects communities worldwide, with attention to how macro-level processes driven by states and commerce are experienced from the ground up by families, indigenous communities, migrant diasporas, grassroots organisations, policymakers and NGOs. The one-year programme studies diverse local responses to globalisation and development among both central and marginalised actors, building on more than two decades of teaching in the field, with a global and transnational orientation spanning dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, empowerment and emancipation, identities that cross borders, and social and political structures that span nations, and possibilities for transforming society. Teaching uses Problem-Based Learning, making study problem-driven and theory-driven and requiring active rather than passive participation.
