European Public Health Medicine & Health 3 years 180 ECTS credits English
Many of the most important determinants of health fall outside of the reach of medicine. Identifying and influencing these factors to protect and promote health is the goal of public health. European Public Health (EPH) starts by giving students a high-quality public health education at bachelor level. Learn all about the health status and healthcare systems of European countries, as well as the authorities, institutions, and laws of the European Union.
EPH is for those who are interested in sustainable public health and healthcare systems, but also in national and international politics, administration and management, policy and strategy, communication and media. You’ll learn to bridge the gap between public health and national and European public health policy. You’ll also develop the skills you need to work in governmental or healthcare-related organisations, or in EU or WHO units, in positions such as a policy advisor, health officer or prevention specialist.

Global Studies 3 years 180 ECTS credits English
Global Studies trains you to understand and develop solutions for complex global issues. The programme is structured around five themes, each of which span a semester of investigation from multiple disciplinary perspectives:
- Environment & Economy
- Migration & Citizenship
- Tolerance & Beliefs
- Peace & Justice
- 21st Century Learning
The themes are preceded by an introductory semester that sets the basis for your explorations to come by giving you insight into the field of global studies. Within each semester theme, your learning about specific content is complemented by courses on research methods (qualitative and quantitative) and skills (academic, professional, and global citizenship skills), which you will use to dive deeper into thematic content. In your final year, you will put your expertise to the test with the option to pursue a one-month local or international field study, and all students write an interdisciplinary Bachelor’s thesis while simultaneously developing an intervention for a societal problem presented to you by an NGO, government agency, firm or a school. Throughout the programme you will also have the opportunity to teach your fellow students… and sometimes even external partners!
Sustainable Bioscience Agriculture & Environmental Sciences 3 years 180 ECTS credits English
Psychology Psychologie Social Sciences & Education 3 years 180 ECTS credits English
Psychologists want to understand, explain, and predict how people think, feel, and behave. They do not only want to understand it, but also change it if necessary. The field of psychology is very broad. More and more, psychologists are called upon to recognise and come up with solutions for societal issues. Think about how people handle crises such as: climate, migration, digitalisation, loneliness, and above all, mental health. During your bachelor, you will learn the field of psychology inside and out.
During the bachelor Psychology we use Programmatic Assessment. With programmatic assessment, insight into your development is created by using a mix of different so-called data points (meaning, no grades). These data points are feedback-oriented. They facilitate the dialogue between you and your mentor/coach. Together you look at which areas need further development. You are given the time and space to make mistakes and learn from feedback.
Major decisions are only made when sufficient data points have painted a rich picture your level of functioning, which is the basis for making a reliable and strong decision. This leads to a reduction of test-related anxiety.
The bachelor's Psychology is taught in English or Dutch.

European Studies Europese Studies Social Sciences & Education 3 years 180 ECTS credits English
The bachelor's programme in European Studies originated from one core idea: It is impossible to understand modern-day Europe and European integration from the perspective of only one discipline. Take the war in Ukraine, or the challenges presented by climate change as examples. These crises can never be fully understood from an economic, political or legal perspective alone. In order to understand what is happening, and to grasp how the European Union, European states, companies, and citizens respond to these challenges, we also need to analyse the historical developments and different political and cultural backgrounds of the actors trying to manage the crises.
Societal and political challenges can only be understood in the broader socio-cultural contexts. Politics, law or economics alone are not enough to solve the European 'puzzle'. Therefore, European Studies adopts a multidisciplinary approach, combining insights and methods from political science, history, international relations, law, economics, philosophy, and sociology.

European Studies on Society, Science and Technology Humanities & Cultural Studies 1 year 60 ECTS credits English
The emergence of new technologies – such as social media platforms, corona apps, robotics, and sustainable energy resources – opens up both opportunities and threats to modern societies and economies. Citizens, governments, businesses and universities face great challenges when trying to take advantage of the seemingly infinite opportunities of scientific and technological innovations, not least because of the unintended consequences that often accompany them.
Convinced that innovation cannot be captured by economics alone and that a purely technical approach is not enough to understand today’s knowledge society, ESST approaches scientific and technological development from a multidisciplinary perspective. The programme explores the interrelated worlds of the scientist, engineer, politician, and citizen by examining the values, economics, history, and politics of modern innovation. Furthermore, its global, culturally sensitive and environmentally conscious angles help you develop ethical awareness and public responsibility.

Health and Digital Transformation Medicine & Health 1 year 60 ECTS credits English
The healthcare sector faces complex challenges, such as rising costs and a shortage of skilled workers. Health expenditures are increasing due to an ageing population, morbidity, and changes in patients’ expectations towards healthcare delivery.
Digital and data-driven solutions can offer a solution to these challenges and make healthcare more affordable, more accessible and of a better quality. There is a lot of attention to new technologies, such as e-health, artificial intelligence, automation, robotics and smart home services. However, the transition to a more digital care process is not self-evident. Technical and digital applications do not always get off the ground or disappear after a while. Additionally, developers lack an understanding of the needs and experiences of end-users in healthcare.
The digital transformation requires bridge builders who understand both the domain of data science and the domain of healthcare. This programme equips you with the knowledge and tools to facilitate the digital transformation in healthcare. You learn how to collaborate and communicate with different stakeholders and how to initiate and lead organisational change.

Technology, markets and societal change 1 year 60 ECTS credits English
New information and communication technologies change existing markets, lead to the generation of new markets, and profoundly affect the actors in these markets. Companies have been able to leverage the availability of big data and new digital technologies to fundamentally change the functioning of existing markets. New technologies have also led to the creation of entirely new markets and labour relations. Many of these impacts of new technologies have the potential to be welfare improving. However, many new technologies pose at the same time grave and unprecedented challenges: Providers of platforms often not only match buyers and sellers but also sell to buyers themselves. Digital ecosystems lock in consumers and foster network externalities on a dramatic scale. In these cases, new technologies give rise to fundamentally new, problematic market dynamics, as evidenced by the dominance of key players such as Amazon or Google.
This specialisation analyses these challenges that arise from new technologies and how this changes society.
After you have studied this specialisation, you will be able to answer the following questions:
- How do new technologies affect existing markets?
- How do new technologies lead to the creation of new markets?
- What are potential competition and antitrust issues?
- What is a responsible (governmental) reaction to new technologies?

It allows learners to understand how a critical analytic and descriptive framework can help understand who is involved in the policy process, how it operates and ultimately leads to a discussion about who is accountable. The answers to these questions help lay a solid foundation for further exploration of policy analysis and formation in other courses. The course is divided into four units. The first unit serves as an introduction to public policy. The second unit introduces in detail the structure of the public policy cycle as defined by Paul Cairney. Keeping Your Voice as You Write in the Age of AI 2 ECTS credits English
This course is open to anyone who writes in an academic context. It invites participants to explore what it means to write in an age where artificial intelligence (AI) can produce fluent text at unprecedented speed. We begin by examining common misconceptions about AI in academic writing, including how Large Language Models (LLMs) operate and what this implies for the texts they generate. We then focus on what AI can and cannot do for writers. Participants will learn to: (1) identify when aspects of the writing process may or may not be responsibly delegated to AI; (2) recognize the risks of over-reliance, including loss of authentic voice and ethical concerns; and (3) critically evaluate AI-generated text for accuracy and relevance. They challenge and experiment with a given system’s underlying building blocks: its rules, policies, technologies, structures, beliefs, habits, values, etc. Social innovation can be pursued from any organisational platform, from businesses to not-for-profits to government agencies. Businesses and other types of organisations are increasingly being called upon to act as innovative agents of social benefit. This call is particularly strong in emerging markets.

Introduction to Data Analytics in R - Online 2 ECTS credits English
Please note that this course will take place online.
The current course introduces participants to one specific software package, namely the open-source programming environment R, and the accompanying developers’ environment R Studio. Through lectures and interactive assignment-based tutorials, students will be introduced to three crucial aspects of data analytics in R: (i) basic objects and operations in R; (ii) working with data in R (management, analysis, and visualization); and (iii) control flow and programming in R. The course offers a good foundation for individuals who intend to get involved in data analytics (e.g., start a business intelligence/analytics master program or plan to take other, independent data analytics courses), but have little or no coding/programming experience. The skills acquired in this course are also useful for data analytics in syntax-driven environments other than R. The course is concentrated in one week, with three contact hours on each day of that week. The sessions are a mix of (interactive) lectures and tutorial meetings. During the lectures, we learn new material, whereas during the tutorial meetings, we discuss assignments to train our understanding of the studied material.
The Philosophy and Sociology of Listening 2 ECTS credits English
What does it matter what people speak when no one listens? If one were to study all the academic fields, would one not essentially be listening to various experts from various fields making various claims about the same world? If no one would listen to each other’s unique experiences of the world and reality, how would we ever be able to organize ourselves in a well-functioning society? Isn’t listening then the predominant constitutive element of communication, knowledge, and society? Academic research and discourse predominantly focus on language and speaking, but little attention is given to the other side of language: listening. It should therefore not be all too surprising to the sensitive and careful observer that in everyday life we see more people talking past each other than listening to each other; much attention is demanded, little is supplied. How does listening therefore relate to the world and society, and vice versa? This is a crucial question to understand in order to tackle many issues in all fields of life as one will not find any part in life where listening is not utilized. This course will therefore focus on the transdisciplinary inquiry of listening (what listening is) and its wider relation to society.
An Introduction to Game Theory - Online 4 ECTS credits English
Game theory is used to analyse conflict situations, recognize guiding principles that determine stable outcomes and identify ways in which certain responses may be induced. The science of game theory has roots in philosophy, economics and mathematics and is finding increasing applications in management and politics. Increasingly, game theory is embedded in the culture of decision making and policy formulation. The objective of this course is to introduce students to the approach, concepts and methodology of game theory using simple puzzles compiled over nearly two decades of teaching game theory as well as articles from reputed newspapers (e.g. The New York Times) about contemporary societal problems. Working through such puzzles will give students practice with examples so that they can analyse real world problems described in the articles with the game theoretic tools.
The originality of this course is that the application of abstract concepts shrouded in complex mathematics will be demystified using cartoons, newspaper texts and simple puzzles. Thus, this would be a unique opportunity for those without a background in mathematics or economics to understand the principles of game theory and learn to apply them to understand strategic problems or conflicts. Logic will be at the center of all analysis.
Social Movements and Protest 2 ECTS credits English
From labour strikes and climate protests to neo-fascist and nationalist rallies, citizens everywhere are on the move. Social movements shape our world, not only through the pursuit of impactful changes, but also through struggles that seek to resist change. This one-week summer course explores how citizens organize, resist, and react to social issues across the political spectrum. Drawing on sociology and related disciplines, the course introduces students to the study of social movements, protest, and activism in contemporary societies. Working from a global comparative perspective, we will examine the emergence, expansion and impacts of a variety of social movements as well as reactionary counter-movements. Through a mix of interactive lectures, engagement with case studies, and foundational readings, students will address key questions such as: What motivates people to join social movements? How do movements sustain themselves? When and why do social movements go into decline?
By the end of the course, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of how social movements and counter-movements interact to shape societies, thus revealing the complex interplay between activism, resistance, and the broader forces of social and political transformation.
Negotiation and Mediation 2 ECTS credits English
Negotiation and mediation are essential skills and a crucial part of our professional and personal lives. Against common belief, these skills can be studied, developed and practiced. By linking theory and practice, the course aims at increasing the participants’ awareness and knowledge of negotiation and mediation theory and at enhancing their personal negotiation and mediation skills. To that end, the course will combine lectures on negotiation and mediation with practical exercises and negotiation simulations. Lectures will be based on the Harvard model of principled negotiation. The course will cover core concepts of negotiation and mediation such as positions versus interests, active listening, creating versus distributing value, empathy and assertiveness, the negotiator´s dilemma, psychology of negotiations and multi-party negotiations. Since a major aim of the course is to hone students’ personal skills and gain confidence as negotiator/mediator, we will spend considerable time on simulations and on debriefing them.
An Introduction to Game Theory 4 ECTS credits English
Introduction to Data Enabled Design (DED) 2 ECTS credits English
Using data as creative material in the design process We live in a world shaped by data, from health to mobility to how we work and live. But in many projects data is still used only at the end to check if choices were right. This summer school explores a different stance: using data as a creative source that can spark ideas, expose meaning and help shape direction from the very start. This course builds on the work of Mathias Funk, Janne van Kollenburg, Sander Bogers, Peter Lovei and Renee Noortmann, who developed new ways to bring data and everyday life closer together in design. Instead of focusing purely on technical tools, we look at how small traces of daily routines, personal stories, and lived experiences can be gathered, read and transformed into insight. These insights help reveal what matters to people, what feels relevant in context, and where opportunities for change lie.
Religion and Culture: Rethinking the Boundaries 2 ECTS credits English
This course explores the complex relationship between religion and culture through a comparative and multidisciplinary perspective.
We begin by ‘examining how “religion” is defined differently in Western intellectual traditions and in Islamic thought, and why these divergent definitions shape the way societies understand faith, morality, and community. Building on this foundation, the course analyzes the main areas regulated by religion- such as the relationship between God and the human being, the self (nafs), society, and the environment-and investigates how cultural contexts influence these domains.
Students will then engage with key concepts such as culture, subculture, counter-culture, and civilization, followed by a comparison between modern positivist civilization and Islamic/Aristotelian/Qur’an-centered models.
The course further addresses the harmony and tension between religion and culture, including the impact of secularization and cultural change on religious understanding. Attention is also given to
the risks of conflating religion with local customs, which can lead to distorted perceptions of religious teachings. Throughout the program, case studies such as Ottoman legal culture, Andalusia, and contemporary pluralistic societies will be used to illustrate how religion and culture shape social structures and coexistence models.

Introduction to Data Analytics in R 2 ECTS credits English
