Amsterdam's one-year Music Studies programme lets students concentrate on historical, cultural, or cognitive approaches to musicology, or combine strands from all three. Rather than treating music as a single field, teaching draws on methods from the humanities, sciences, and social sciences to examine how music is created, perceived, and understood in different contexts. Students can work with frameworks including historiography, cognitive science, postcolonial theory, computational methods, ethnography, and philosophy, applying them to a wide range of musical traditions studied by the teaching staff, among them musical traditions spanning the Middle East, two centuries of European and North American art music, South African and Indonesian repertoire, and jazz played around the world. The combination of disciplinary breadth and a global range of musical repertoire distinguishes the programme, giving students room to shape a course of study around their own musical and theoretical interests.
