MA/MS in European Studies: East European Studies

The one-year master's builds a grasp of the history of countries across Eastern Europe, Russia included, alongside insight into recent developments in the region, examining how East and West relate to one another, how popular culture feeds into everyday life, and the interplay between political centres and peripheries. Specific focus falls on how nations have been built and where conflicts have emerged within sub-regions such as the Caucasus, Ukraine and Crimea, and the Balkans, together with how nationalism connects to political Islam or to Christian Orthodoxy. The European Studies programme dates back to 1948 and combines a structured curriculum with staff-led tutorials tailored to individual regional and thematic interests, weekly seminars and guest lectures from visiting scholars, and the option of an internship with an NGO, academic institution or in the diplomatic sector.
