The one-year programme develops the knowledge and skills needed to analyse a chosen language within its social context, grounding core linguistics concepts and theory in real-world examples and focusing on how language is used and how it varies. Students explore why languages differ within particular communities, differences in use and policy, and the influence of factors such as multilingualism and computer-mediated communication, with the option to concentrate on one of seven European language communities: English, French, German, Italian, Scandinavian, Slavonic, or Spanish, building expertise in that language's linguistics while also improving their own productive and receptive proficiency in it. The programme develops analytical skills that prepare students for their own research and for working with linguistic data, including its collection, processing, analysis, and interpretation, alongside spoken and written communicative competence in both the chosen language and English, with a broad range of complementary electives allowing further tailoring.
