Psychology students learn in small classes with experienced faculty and gain practical knowledge through internships with local organizations. A yearlong independent study, the Emerging Scholars Program, places them directly in research with a professor.
The major leads to careers in banking, law, medicine, marketing, human resources and counseling, and, with more training, to work as a school psychologist or mental health counselor. Those aiming to become doctoral-level clinical or school psychologists need this preparation, because many postgraduate paths call for a psychology major. Students can gain supervised experience at off-campus sites as well as in campus labs.
A minor in psychology complements other majors, and a 4+1 pathway leads to a master's degree in five years. Eligible graduates have guaranteed admission to a creative arts therapy counseling program at Hofstra, and the Scholar Teacher Education Program is available.
